Dental Implants

Same day teeth at National Dental Upper East SideIt used to be that, when you lost your teeth, your options were limited to dentures. While still used today, and designed to be superior to their previous counterparts, you now have more options. One of the options available for your tooth loss is dental implants. Moreover, at National Dental Upper East Side, you can have your permanent restorations the same day that your implants are placed.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the latest option available for replacing missing teeth. They are often preferred by both patients and practitioners (including National Dental) alike. They consist of three major parts – a titanium rod, an abutment and the crown. The implants are surgically placed into your jawbone.

Implants rely on osseointegration. What this means is that, while you heal, your jawbone fuses with the implant. This creates a strong, stable support for your replacement tooth (or teeth). Once healed, the implant imitates the root of your natural tooth. This goes a long way in preserving the integrity of your jawbone.

Every patient is different, and your tooth replacement needs unique. For this reason, there are several types of implants, allowing us to meet your specific needs:
•  Single tooth implants are designed to replace a single missing tooth. One implant is placed into the jawbone and supports a single crown.
•  Multiple teeth implants or an implant supported the bridge. This type of implant is designed to replace several consecutive missing teeth (replacing a traditional fixed bridge or partial denture). Your replacement teeth can be supported on as little as one implant, but the exact number of implants required depends upon your specific needs and our comprehensive evaluation of your mouth.
•  Implant supported dentures. If you are missing an entire arch of teeth or all of your teeth, you may be a candidate for implant supported dentures. An entire arch of replacement teeth is supported by 6 to 8 implants per arch.
•  All-on-4® Treatment Concept. These implants are an alternative to regular implant supported dentures. Your jaw requires sufficient bone mass to successfully support implants. If you have suffered some bone loss before seeking dental implants, your jaw may not be strong enough. In the past, this would mean either you would then be given dentures, or you would undergo a bone graft surgical procedure before implant surgery. All-on-4 implants allow you the ability to receive implants while avoiding the need for a bone graft. Your replacement teeth are supported on four strategically placed implants.

How are Traditional Implants Placed?

Implants involve a surgical procedure. After a local anesthetic is given, incisions are created in your gum tissue, exposing your bone. With a specialized drill, we create holes in the jawbone and insert the implants. Your gums are then stitched closed around them.

Typically, this is the point during which you would receive temporary teeth while you heal. While they provide you with some abilities to eat and speak as normal, they are not as strong as what your permanent restorations will be. You will have these temporary teeth throughout your healing process, which can last several weeks to several months, depending upon your specific surgical procedure. Once you have healed, abutments are placed, and impressions are taken. It will then take up to two more weeks for your permanent restorations to be made. When they are finished, you will then return one last time so that your implants can be screwed into place.

Technology Means You Get Your Teeth Faster

Thanks to technological advancements, you can get your permanent teeth faster. In fact, you can have them on the same day that you have your implants placed. Rather than creating your implants after you have healed, we use technology to design them after your initial consultation, so your replacement tooth, or teeth, will be ready for you on the day of your procedure.

With the use of the ICAT scanner, we can take a 3-dimensional image of the interior of your mouth, which includes your existing teeth, your jawbone, and your nerves. This image provides us with precise, 1:1 measurements. We can then use the image to plan your surgical procedure, finding the optimal placement of your implants, as well as design your custom replacement teeth.

After we have designed your implant, it is time for its creation. With technological assistance, the implants we designed from your ICAT image are turned into reality. They are custom fabricated, based on the parameters of your mouth, and the exact specifications of your unique situation.

Your teeth are ready and waiting for you when you arrive. As soon as we are finished placing your implants, the abutments are set on their exposed ends, and your permanent replacement teeth are set in place.

Benefits of Same Day Implants

One of the biggest benefits of same day implants is that you get to leave the office with your final restorations. This helps to lessen the number of visits you need. We will still monitor your healing periodically, but the visits required to place the abutments, take impressions and then place the implants are eliminated. The need for temporary restorations while you heal (and while your final restorations are being created), is also a thing of the past.

Other benefits of same day implants are those similar to regular dental implants. Your replacement teeth are set in place. Unlike dentures, they do not need to be periodically replaced, unless they become damaged, and are meant to last a lifetime. Implants are more comfortable than dentures, your teeth supported by the titanium rods rather than your gums. They are also easier to care for. They are not removed for cleaning (staying in 24/7). Instead, they can be brushed just like your natural teeth.

One of the biggest advantages of implants, however, is the fact that they preserve the integrity of your jawbone. When you lose your teeth, your jawbone weakens and changes shape. This can cause your face to change shape, and any remaining teeth to shift. Shifting teeth can throw off your bite, and cause jaw pain. However, with implants, your jaw remains stable and strong.
