Rotary Endo

Rotary Endo at National Dental Upper East SideIf you have an infected tooth, the only way to save the tooth and avoid extraction is with endodontic treatment. Otherwise referred to as a root canal, endodontic treatment involves the removal of the pulp of an infected tooth and the cleaning of the canals. Root canals are often thought to be a scary procedure. At National Dental Upper East Side, we utilize the latest technology in endodontic treatment. With rotary endodontic treatment, we can provide you with highly effective treatment, but we can also ease your fears over the treatment itself.

Root Canal Treatment

Your teeth are made up multiple parts – the exterior (enamel), the dentin (which houses hollow channels, and the pulp. The pulp is where the nerves and blood vessels reside. If the pulp becomes infected, it needs to be removed. The only way to do this is with a root canal.

A root canal, which is an endodontic treatment, involves drilling into the top of the tooth and removing the infected pulp from the inner canals. The canals are then cleaned, disinfected, and filled. The tooth is capped with a dental crown, which seals your tooth from any new bacterial invasion while providing the tooth with strength.

Rotary Endodontics

Traditionally, a root canal was performed manually. Now, however, we employ the use of electrical instruments, in a treatment known as rotary endodontics. The electric handheld tool has a nickel titanium tip that is up to 5 times more flexible than stainless steel (which is what the traditional manual file is made of). The flexibility of the rotary tool’s tip means that it can be inserted into a curved canal without risk of damaging it. Because of this, rotary endodontics makes for a quicker procedure.

Benefits of Rotary Endodontic Treatment

There are some benefits associated with the use of rotary endodontics:
•  The use of the electric rotary tool is much more reliable than the traditional manual file. This means that there is much less risk for complication.
•  With the nickel titanium tip of the rotary tool, the cleaning of the root canal is smoother and much more consistent.
•  The electric rotary tool does its job faster than manual filing.
•  Electric tools are quieter.

Quite possibly the biggest benefit of rotary endodontic treatment comes from the combination of the speed of treatment, along with the use of quieter instruments. There are still plenty of other dentists out there who use a manual stainless-steel file. The file is famous for its loud grinding sound. This loud grinding is often what gives the root canal its reputation as being a scary, painful procedure. Thanks to the rotary tools we use, the sounds made while we perform a root canal are barely noticeable. Patients are more comfortable sitting in our chair, and their procedure goes quickly and painlessly. There is no stress or worry about how your procedure will go. You will be in and out, and back to your normal life, before you know it.
