Dental Veneers

Your teeth have many important jobs. One of these jobs is to provide you with a beautiful smile. However, if you have imperfections in your teeth, even minor ones, your smile can be marred, and your confidence is shaken. At National Dental Upper East Side, we can provide you with veneers, which can restore the beauty to your smile.

What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin, shell-like structures that are designed to cover the front portion of visible teeth. They can cover some minor dental imperfections. To be placed, a small amount of enamel needs to be removed. Once set, there is no telling the difference between the veneer and your natural teeth.

What are Veneers Made Of?

At National Dental, our veneers are made from porcelain. Porcelain can perfectly match the color of your natural teeth, which allows the restoration to blend in seamlessly. It is relatively strong and can withstand normal biting and chewing forces. With proper care, porcelain can last 20 years or more.

Imperfections that Can Be Fixed with Veneers

Veneers can be used to fix a variety of dental imperfections:
•  Small cracks or chips.
•  Gaps between your teeth.
•  Teeth that are misshapen.
•  Discoloration that cannot be fixed with professional whitening.

How are Veneers Placed?

Veneers take two visits to place. During your first visit, we prepare your tooth. With a veneer, only a small amount of enamel needs to be removed to create the space needed for a comfortable, natural fit. Next, we take an impression of your mouth, which is sent to our lab, where your veneer will be created. The mold helps to ensure a proper fit. It can take up to two weeks for the restoration to be completed. In most cases, you will not require a temporary restoration while you wait.

On your second visit, the veneer is checked for a proper fit. To keep the veneer in place, we must first create a texture on your tooth. This involves the use of an acidic gel, which creates a rough surface. The gel is washed off, and the tooth cleaned and dried. The rough surface allows the dental cement to better adhere to the tooth, providing a stronger bond between the veneer and your natural tooth. Once in place, you are left with a completely natural, beautiful smile.

Caring for Your New Veneers

For the most part, your veneers can be cared for just like the rest of your natural teeth. Regular brushing and flossing are important to remove plaque and bacterial buildup. While the veneer cannot be damaged by bacteria, the bacteria harbored on the restoration can harm the rest of your mouth. You should avoid biting down on, and chew, anything hard, such as ice, popcorn kernels, or your fingernails, as these actions can cause fractures or chips in the porcelain. Regular dental visits are also essential to maintaining a healthy mouth. During your routine exams, we will check the condition of your veneers to make sure that they are not damaged in any way.
