Wisdom Teeth Removal
Your wisdom teeth, or third molars, often emerge anywhere in your late teens to your early 20s, which is how they received their name. While they are the last of your teeth to erupt, they are also the most likely to pose problems. The only way to address these problems is with extraction. At National Dental Upper East Side, we can remove your wisdom teeth and alleviate your pain, restoring the health of your mouth.
Impacted Wisdom TeethWhile there is a small number of people who never experience any issues with their wisdom teeth, and they emerge just like any other tooth would, there are many others who are faced with serious complications. One of the biggest issues faced by many people is impacted wisdom teeth.
Having an impacted tooth simply means that it cannot properly erupt through the gum tissue, or that it cannot erupt at all. Impacted wisdom teeth may be blocked, or it may be attempting to emerge at an angle. Whatever the reason for your impacted teeth, they can cause serious problems:
Diagnosing Problems with Your Wisdom TeethImpacted wisdom teeth need to be diagnosed and then treated. When you come into our office, we first give your mouth a thorough visual inspection. We may also take a few digital X-rays, which will allow us to see exactly what is happening under the gum line. These X-rays will also help us to develop a treatment plan that provides you with the best results.
How are Wisdom Teeth Extracted?Your wisdom teeth can be extracted in one of two ways. The first way is known as a simple extraction. After a local anesthetic, your wisdom teeth are gripped with forceps. The teeth are moved back and forth, widening the socket. Once loose enough, the teeth are simply lifted out.
In many cases, wisdom teeth require a surgical extraction. After a local anesthetic, incisions are made in your gums near the affected teeth, exposing the impacted teeth and your jawbone. In some cases, we will need to remove some bone, or even break the tooth to ensure that it is removed completely. Once finished, we stitch up the surgical sites, and you can go home to rest and recover.
