Aside from the 4 minutes each day that you spend brushing your teeth, you probably don’t think about them too much. However, when you lose them, they quickly become one of the only things you think about. Simple tasks like eating and speaking become extremely difficult. Your appearance is altered and can leave you feeling self-conscious. What’s more, your jawbone begins to resorb and weaken, changing shape. This can age you drastically beyond your years. For decades, the answer to tooth loss has been dentures. Today, you have options. Moreover, at National Dental Upper East Side, those options include All-on-4® dental implants.

Dental implants are the latest option available for replacing missing teeth. Implants involve a surgical procedure, in which small, titanium rods are placed into the jawbone. Your jawbone then fuses to the titanium rods as you heal from surgery. As a result, the rods become strong “roots” on which your replacement teeth are supported.

Typically, for dental implants, you need to have a sufficient amount of bone mass to successfully support the implants. However, when you lose your teeth, your jawbone begins to weaken. If you wait too long before seeking implant treatment, you may lack sufficient bone mass. In many instances, you may first require another surgical procedure, a bone graft, before you can undergo implant surgery.

All-on-4® implants are different. They are designed for patients who have suffered some bone loss and are not candidates for regular implants. They are placed in such a way to provide maximum stability. At National Dental Manhattan, we utilize implants created by Nobel Biocare, which is the leading implant manufacturer in the world.

With regular dental implants, 6 to 8 dental implants are placed in the jaw to support an entire arch of missing teeth. With All-on-4® implants, only 4 rods are placed per arch (replacing your entire mouth would then only require 8 total implants), and they are done so strategically. Two implants are placed toward the front of the mouth and are inserted vertically. The other two are placed toward the back of the jaw and are inserted at a 45-degree angle.

Implants are placed using a surgical procedure. After we use a local anesthetic to numb the surgical sites, incisions are made in the gum tissue to expose the bone. Using a specialized drill, we create holes in your jawbone, according to your treatment plan. We place the implants and suture your gums closed around them, leaving a small portion exposed. It can take several weeks to heal from surgery, during which time we will monitor your progress. Once your bone has healed, abutments are placed on the rods. Impressions are taken, which are used to fabricate your permanent teeth. When ready, they are secured in place with screws.

All-on-4® implants have several benefits:

  • You require a smaller number of implants, which means less surgery.
  • Less surgery results in a shorter healing period.
  • All-on-4 implants help you to avoid the need for a bone graft.
  • You get all the same benefits as regular dental implants – strong, stable teeth that can be cared for just like your natural teeth. Implants also help to preserve the strength of your jawbone, preventing bone loss and changes in your facial shape.
