DENTAL BRACES – METAL AND CLEAR
Misaligned teeth can have a significant impact on your life. Not only do they affect your smile, causing you to become self-conscious, they can also affect your oral health. Misaligned teeth can throw off your bite, causing your teeth to wear unevenly and serious jaw pain. At National Dental Upper East Side, we can fix your smile, and the health of your mouth, with braces.
WHAT ARE DENTAL BRACES?
Braces are a corrective oral appliance used to fix misaligned teeth. They consist of several components, all designed to give you a healthy, beautiful smile:
- Brackets: Brackets are the metal pieces that are attached to the surface of your teeth. They are attached with a special bonding material during your first visit.
- Archwire: The archwire connects to the brackets and is held in place by elastic rings. Wires come in varying sizes. We start with the thinnest wire, and gradually work up to thicker ones to achieve the desired results.
- Metal bands: These bands attach to your back teeth and act as anchors for the archwires.
Depending upon your specific needs, there are also several other components that can be added to align your teeth, as well as your jaw. These components consist of rubber bands, springs, hooks, loops, and headgear.
HOW DO DENTAL BRACES WORK?
While there are many components to braces, the archwires do the majority of the work on your teeth. The archwires exert pressure, which then places pressure on the periodontal ligaments that hold them in place. The archwire then guides your teeth into the correct position and holds them there while the bone and ligament heal. It takes about 3 months for new tissue to grow, and can take up to a year for your teeth to stabilize in their new position.
For many patients, particularly older teens and adults, the idea of having “metal mouth” is unappealing. At National Dental, we provide an alternative – clear braces. Clear braces are aligners that are made out of clear, rigid plastic, and are created from a 3-dimensional scan of your mouth. Treatment involves a series of aligners, which work to gradually shift your teeth into a more natural position. Each set of aligners is worn for two weeks at a time.
The length of treatment with clear aligners is often shorter than it is with traditional braces. Most patients achieve the desired results in under a year, although more serious cases make take closer to two years. During this time, you may wear anywhere from 18 to 30 sets of aligners. Clear aligners offer some benefits – they are removable, they are more comfortable, and most importantly, they cannot be seen by those around you.
Clear braces are not the answer for everyone, however. For severe misalignment, and jaw alignment issues, clear aligners may not be able to help you get the results you want, and need. In cases such as these, your mouth, your smile, and your oral health may benefit better from the use of traditional braces.
