When your teeth hurt, it’s easy to just take some over the counter pain relievers and try to forget about it. This can be difficult to do, though, especially if the pain is severe. Painful teeth should never be ignored. They can be a warning sign of a serious problem. National Dental Upper East Side is here to help.

Tooth pain can have one of many different causes. Some of them may not be all that serious, but others are rather serious and require treatment right away. So, unless you know the exact cause of your tooth pain, it is in your best interest to seek treatment as soon as possible. Causes of tooth pain include:

  • Tooth decay.
  • Gum disease.
  • Tooth eruption. This is often a common cause of tooth pain in babies and children.
  • A misaligned bite.
  • Facial trauma.
  • An infection in the tooth.

Sometimes you may think you have a toothache, but it can be something else. For instance, TMJ problems and sinus infections can often make you think there is something wrong with your teeth because of the proximity to the roots of your teeth. Pain around the teeth can also indicate health problems that have nothing to do with the teeth, such as a heart condition.

Many of the symptoms that accompany tooth pain often mislead you into thinking you have an entirely different problem. These symptoms include:

  • Fever.
  • Swelling of the gums around the affected tooth.
  • Trouble breathing or swallowing.
  • A bad taste in your mouth that does not go away.
  • Pain that lingers, even after any irritants have disappeared.

The treatment you require for your tooth pain depends heavily on the cause of the pain. To diagnose the cause of your pain, we need to perform a complete oral exam. During this exam, we visually inspect your mouth for swelling at the gums and signs of damage to your teeth. We may also order a digital X-ray which will give us a clearer image of what is happening below the gums.
Once we have determined the cause of your pain, we can then provide you with the treatment you need. Depending on the cause, treatment may include orthodontic treatment, periodontal treatment, endodontic treatment (root canal), fillings for cavities, or oral surgery.

While you can’t prevent all causes of painful teeth, there are measures you can take to prevent many of the causes from occurring. For instance, brushing and flossing regularly will help to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. If you play sports, wear a mouth guard to prevent sports-related oral injuries. It is also important that you visit the office at least twice a year for regular cleanings and exams. During these exams, we can inspect your teeth for signs of gum disease and damage to your teeth, and provide you with a thorough cleaning. By doing your best to take care of your teeth, you can protect them from serious complications.
