You do your best to take care of your mouth. You brush and floss every day. However, sometimes, despite your best efforts, things can happen. Moreover, unfortunately, you may not notice issues until they become something more serious. At National Dental Upper East Side, we offer dental exams, which are designed to spot areas of trouble and take care of them, allowing your mouth to stay happy and healthy.

A dental exam is a thorough examination of your mouth that allows us to see any areas that might be cause for concern. Exams are often conducted at the same time as your cleanings and should be done at least twice a year. With an exam, we can assess the overall health of your mouth, and take preventative measures to keep your oral health at optimal performance. There are a few different categories of an oral exam:

  • Comprehensive oral exam: This type of exam is done when you are visiting us for the first time, or it has been a while since your last exam.
  • Periodic oral exam: A periodic exam is your regular six-month, checkup. During these exams, we simply update the information from your last exam. We thoroughly inspect your mouth and check for any signs of problems.
  • Limited oral exam: This type of exam is performed when we are diagnosing the cause of specific symptoms, such as pain and swelling. A limited exam may require X-rays as part of the diagnostic procedure.
  • Follow-up evaluation: Follow-ups are done to check your healing progress following a given treatment.

An oral exam is a complete examination of your mouth and the structures within. We perform a visual inspection of your teeth, gums, and tongue. We will also check the roof of your mouth as well as entrance to the throat. All the while, we are checking for signs of common oral health problems. Your teeth are being examined for signs of tooth decay, cracks, fractures or other damage. If you have any restorations (implants, crowns, veneers, etc.) these will also be inspected for signs of damage. We check your gums for signs of gum disease – inflammation, redness, gum recession, exposed roots. You may also notice that we examine your face and neck. This is part of our oral cancer screening, which is a regular part of your exam. Other things we check for include lesions or other oddities on the soft tissues of your mouth.

Once we are finished examining your mouth, we will have a discussion with you. We will ask you about your oral hygiene habits, as well as any lifestyle habits that can affect your oral health (such as smoking). We will provide you with tips on how to improve your at-home oral health care and answer any questions you might have.

Part of your exam may include a digital X-ray. These are not done on every exam, but they are an essential part of your oral healthcare file. Digital X-rays allow us to see areas of your mouth that are otherwise invisible – under your gums, and your jawbone. X-rays can prove an invaluable tool in diagnosing certain oral health issues and making sure that your mouth is in tip-top shape.

A dental exam is an essential component of your oral health, allowing us to take care of small issues before they become serious. Call National Dental Upper East Side today at (646) 736-2206 to schedule yours today!
